Dear Parent/Guardian and Student,
As a staff, we would like to welcome you to Physical Education (PE) at Patrick
Henry Middle School (PHMS). We believe your experience in PE will be both
positive and exciting. Over the past decade, physical education has undergone
a significant makeover. No longer is PE limited to traditional sports and
athletics. Today the main goal of PE is to prepare students for a life time
of physical activity and health.
To achieve this we have incorporated the National Challenge Standards into our teaching.
These standards are summarized below:
Movement Skills and Movement Knowledge:
- Students will be competent in many movement activities.
- Students will understand how and why one moves and will use this information
to enhance personal skills.
Self-Image and Personal Development:
- Students will achieve and maintain a health enhancing level of fitness.
- Students will exhibit a physically active lifestyle.
- Students will demonstrate responsible personal behavior while participating
in class activities.
- Social Development and Responsibility:
- Students will demonstrate responsible social behavior while participating.
Students will understand the importance of showing respect for other
students.
- Students will understand the interrelationships between history and culture
and games, sport, play and dance.
We are committed to making the Physical Education Program the very best In the
country. Our facilities are second to none and include a health club quality
Fitness Center and the only complete Adventure Learning Course (Ropes Course)
located on a secondary school campus. The Adventure Learning Course includes
a rockwall and over 20 high (30' to 60') and low challenge initiatives.
Students are trained in all aspects of safe participation. In addition,
students at Patrick Henry have led the entire LAUSD is fitness scores and
