Dr. L Carr - Department Chair - lcarr@lausd.k12.ca.us
Dr. Carr grew up locally and graduated from Canoga Park High School. He then attended
Brigham Young University (BYU) on a football scholarship eventually graduating with a Masters
degree (M.S.) in Analysis of Movement and a PhD in Exercise Physiology and a minor in
Zoology. He receives his teaching credential from CSU, Northridge. His teaching career began
as a professor of Health Sciences at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan where he taught
for 10 years. After spending 8 years in private business, he returned to Southern California and
started with LAUSD. He has been at Patrick Berny since 1997 and has subsequently earned his
National Board Certification in Physical Education. He is married to Mrs. Carr (a math/science
teacher at Holmes Middle School), the father of four grown children, and the grandfather of five.
Ms. D Freitas
Ms. Freitas grew up locally and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Physical Education and
her teaching credential from CSU, Northridge. She has played competitive softball, as well as
refereed and coached a variety of activities from cheerleading to basketball.
Mr. M Finestone - mwf1888@1ausd.kI2.ca.us
Mr. Finestone graduated from Newbury Park High School where he played football
and baseball. He graduated from the University of Southern California (USC)
in 1991 with a Bachelors of Arts in Communication and Sports Studies. Upon
graduation, he worked for a professional sports agent. He then enrolled
and earned a teaching credential from CSU, Northridge. While earning his
credential, Mr. Finestone coached Junior and Varsity baseball at Westlake
and Newbury Park High School. He began teaching in 1998 and has taught Physical
Education at Sun Valley Middle School and Science at Porter Middle School.
Mr. Finestone is married with two children.
Mrs. L MacDonald - lem6895@lausd.k12.ca.us
Mrs. MacDonald was born in Northern Indiana and moved after elementary school
to Southern California. She graduated from Riverside Poly High School where
she competitively played basketball, soccer, softball, and volleyball and
was active in the band. Mrs. MacDonald received her teaching credential
and Bachelors degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training
and Teaching/Coaching from CSU, Northridge. She has been teaching at Patrick
Henry since 1999. Mrs. MacDonald is married and the mother of two children,
Zach (II) and Zoe (1).
Mrs. K Raia
Mrs. Raia grew up in Simi Valley, California and graduated from Royal High School in 1993.
She was on the cross-country and track teams. As a senior, she was named Athlete of the Year.
She attended Moorpark Junior College and CSU, Northridge where she earned her Bachelors of
Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Teaching/Coaching in 1999. Mrs. Raia ran the Los
Angeles Marathon in 1999 and was the 51st female with a time of 3 hours and 22 minutes. She
coached cross-country and track for seven years at Sinaloa and Royal High School while
attending Moorpark Junior College and CSU, Northridge. This will be her fourth year teaching
Physical Education at Patrick Henry. She is married and a happy mother.
