All students have the ability to earn an "A" in PE if they come to class prepared to follow directions and give their best effort. Grades are based on:
- Written Work - Each unit the student will be graded either
by written assessment or by skins assessment. If a student misses school
with an excused absence, they will be allowed to make-up the test, which
is their responsibility to reschedule. Written work also consists of
any homework, classwork, or notes to be signed by parents that are given
to the entire class. There will be at least one Written Work grade for
each unit. In seventh grade, the following units may be covered: Golf,
Juggling, Racketball, Rock Climbing, 3-on-3 Basketball, Volleyball,
3-on-3 softball, Track (sprints, relays, hurdles, distance), Dance,
Biking. Rollerblading, Fitness education, and Fitness testing (scores
are recorded and sent up to the state for student and school profiles).
- Citizenship - Citizenship is the ability of students to follow
directions, use proper listening skills as well as communication skills
and solving problems non-violently. It is their ability to get along
with their peers and adults in class (social skins). Daily participation
is also a part of this grade. Medically excused non-participators( by
a doctor) maybe given limited written or other appropriate assignments
to make-up daily activity. Extended non-participation must be done so
with a doctor's note so that activities may be modified appropriately.
There will be no make-ups allowed in Citizenship. Students will loose
points each day absent and may make up these points.
- Responsibility - Responsibility consists of being on time,
doing class warm-ups, having and wearing their PE clothes and turning
written work in on time. Being on time is getting into the locker room
before the tardy bell and being seated in the proper roll call after
leaving the locker room. Class warm-ups are done daily to help improve
individual flexibility and to prepare for daily activities. I look for
the student to stay on task and perform the proper form. Students are
checked the first day of each week to see that they took their PE clothes
home to wash and each day that they are wearing a proper PE uniform.
There will be no make-ups allowed for unexcused tardies, non-dresses
or not doing warm-ups. Students win loose points each day absent and
may make up these points.
- Weekly Run - Each week we run to help improve student's cardiovascular
fitness. The run will usually be a 20-minute run, a Partner run, or
a Mile run. Students are encouraged to do extra credit laps before school,
at nutrition or lunch, or after school, to improve their score received
on a run.
20-minute Run - The students nm for 20 minutes to complete
as many laps as they can.
Partner Run - The students and their partner run every
other lap with a partner for 20 minutes to complete as many as they
can.
Mile Run - Individual grade is based on improvement and rated against
national averages and the top 15% in the US.
- Improvement: Any student that improves their mile time over their personal best time will automatically score at least a 90%!
- 90% and up: Reaching this goal means the grade
heart and lungs are healthy, if this goal cannot be reached, then
the grade heart and lungs are not yet healthy and they need more cardiovascular
work.
- 100%: Student is in the top 15% of all the kids in the United
States for their grade and gender!
- Work Habits and Cooperation Marks - In Work Habits, each student
is allowed one tardy, one non-dress or one time of not doing warm-ups
per grading period without penalty, to earn an "E". Any combination
of 2-3 tardies, non-dresses, or warm-ups to earns an "S". Any combination
of 4 or more earns a "U". In Cooperation, 1-2 marks per grading period
earns an "S", 3 or more marks earns a "U". This grade will reflect only
the past grading period (typically 6-8 weeks) and starts over each period.
